Title: Spellslinger
Series: Spellslinger #1
Author: Sebastien de Castell
Genre: Young Adult / Fantasy
My Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★
There are three things that earn you a man’s name among the Jan’Tep. The first is to demonstrate the strength to defend your family. The second is to prove you can perform the high magic that defines our people. The third is simply to reach the age of sixteen. I was a few weeks shy of my birthday when I learned that I wouldn’t be doing any of those things.
Magic is a con game.
Kellen is moments away from facing his first mage's duel and the start of four trials that will make him a spellcaster. There's just one problem: his magic is gone. As his sixteenth birthday approaches, Kellen falls back on his cunning in a bid to avoid total disgrace. But when a daring stranger arrives in town, she challenges Kellen to take a different path. Ferius Parfax is one of the mysterious Argosi - a traveller who lives by her wits and the three decks of cards she carries. She's difficult and unpredictable, but she may be Kellen's only hope...
This was my first read from author Sebastien de Castell and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Soon to be sixteen Kellen must soon pass the trials of the Jan'Tep to earn his mage name and place in society. Unfortunately Kellen has so little magic he resorts to trickery to try and pass his first test, which let's say doesn't exactly go to plan.
Kellen is one of those characters that I just can't help but route for. He takes a stand for what he thinks is right even when he knows people will turn on him, admittedly it sometimes takes him a minute but the main point is he gets there.
The society of the Jan'Tep was pretty brutal. I mean relegating your own family members to being Sha'Tep and live in servitude just because they have little to no magic is just plain savage, but it all adds to world.
Ferius Parfax was a great character I only hope we get to see more of her story in following books. Then we come to my favourite character Reichis, the sarcastic and snarky squirrel cat. He was just so funny I actually (embarrassingly) giggled in public🙈
One complaint I would have is that the romance and I use that word lightly because it was hardly there, but I just felt it was unnecessary and kind of just shoe horned in there for the sake of it.
A great start to the series and I have really looking forward to continuing.
